What the work looks like
Inside a Industrial Supply & Distribution outside-sales role.
The most direct observation from our data is this: we currently show zero open outside sales positions in Industrial Supply & Distribution. While that's unusual, this market is often slow to post publicly. Companies frequently fill these roles from their network or promote from inside sales. When they do post, we see names like MSC Industrial Supply or Fastenal, but neither is actively listing with us for this role today.
## The Outside Rep's Mandate
An outside sales role in this sector is not about pushing product from a catalog. Your job is to be a technical resource on the ground. You'll spend your days driving a territory, visiting manufacturing facilities, machine shops, and construction sites. The core function is managing and growing a book of business.
This involves:
* Walking a customer's plant floor to identify needs for abrasives, safety equipment, or cutting tools they hadn't considered.
* Implementing vendor-managed inventory (VMI) systems.
* Solving a customer's production problem with a new product, not just taking their reorder for fasteners.
This is a proactive, consultative role. You are the face of the company in that territory. It differs fundamentally from inside sales, which is typically reactive and focused on quoting inbound requests. The outside rep owns the territory's revenue goal.
## Territory and Compensation
Expect to be in your car daily, covering a specific geographic area. Most of these roles are local or regional, meaning you’re home most nights. It is a high-activity job that requires disciplined scheduling.
Regarding compensation, our current sample of postings does not provide enough data to state a reliable salary range. I can tell you from 15 years of placing reps that the structure is almost universally a base salary plus a commission or bonus plan. This is typically tied to sales volume or, more often, gross margin dollars on the accounts you manage.

Frequently asked
About Industrial Supply & Distribution outside-sales roles.
It helps but isn't strictly required for most Industrial Supply & Distribution roles. Top employers run associate-rep programs and accept candidates from adjacent fields (engineering, kinesiology, prior B2B sales). Read the description on each listing — most explicitly call out the preferred background.
Travel varies by sub-segment, but most Industrial Supply & Distribution territory roles run 50–75% in-person time. We surface travel % per listing when the employer discloses it — filter for "Travel ≥ 50%" on the city hub if that's the priority.
Associate rep → Sales rep (territory) → Senior rep → Regional or District Manager → National Account Director. Most reps stay in IC roles for several years before moving to management; the comp incentives reward that.
Across active listings, SunSource (—), Core & Main ($69k), Trane Technologies (—) top the disclosed-base list. Variable pay can push total comp meaningfully higher — see each company hub for the full picture.
